Great Expectations for Parents Weekday Program - nmh
Prepare for the childbirth experience through instruction on labor stages, hospital procedures, breathing and relaxation techniques, pain medication, postpartum and newborn care, and feeding newborns.
4-class series: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday; 6:30 to 9 pm. Fee: $85/couple. 2-class series: Fridays, 5 to 9 pm. Fee: $125/couple (with dinner. To register for this class please call 1.877.926.4NMH (4664)

Great Expectations for Parents Weekend Program
This is a one-day, all-day version of the Great Expectations Weekday Program. Prepare for the childbirth experience through instruction on labor stages, hospital procedures, breathing and relaxation techniques, pain medication, postpartum and newborn care, and feeding newborns. Includes beverages/light snack.
Every Saturday and Sunday; call for specific dates; 8:30 am to 5:30 pm

Expectant Fathers - Northwestern Memorial Hospital

Boot Camp For New Dads

This course "Boot Camp For Dads" is offered at Condell Medical Center and provides new dads with expert guidance from veteran fathers and parenting specialists. Offered as a three-hour workshop.

Family Matters

Tike Hike
This class helps prepare soon-to-be older brothers and sisters for their new sibling. Includes a tour of Prentice. Children receive a sticker and certificate for attending.

International nonprofit group that provides education, information, support, and encouragement to women who want to breastfeed. La Leche runs monthly meetings in various locations throughout the city to discuss breastfeeding and answer questions. They also have a telephone help service and publish the popular "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding." The web site provides information on breastfeeding including "Frequently Asked Questions," and you can also submit a specific question and they will get back to you.

"An IBCLC is a health care professional who specializes in the clinical management of breastfeeding. IBCLCs are certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners Inc. under the direction of the US National Commission for Certifying Agencies. IBCLCs work in a variety of health care settings including hospitals, pediatric offices, public health clinics, and private practice."

An IBCLC offers a variety of services which may include:

  • prenatal breastfeeding education

  • postnatal hospital, clinic, and office visits

  • home visits

  • educational literature

  • rental of hospital-grade electric breast pumps

  • new mothers' support groups

Schedule an appointment with an IBCLC for any of the following:

  • nipple or breast pain

  • latch on difficulties

  • flat or inverted nipples

  • low milk supply

  • slow weight gain

  • crying or colicky baby

  • breastfeeding a premature baby

  • breastfeeding twins and triplets

  • relactation and adoptive breastfeeding

  • breastfeeding and return to employment outside the home

  • pumping and storing breastmilk

  • special needs baby eg Down Syndrome, cleft lip and/or palate

  • reassurance that breastfeeding is going well
